Winter Rye is a very good choice for winter grass and loves Texas soils. I believe it can be broadcast and will still perform well without raking into the soil
BUT ….. at the end of season(April) left to seed (3-4′ growth), it will lay down and BLOCK other vegetation growth at a crucial time. This has been my experience.
It would be better to cut or let your sheep cut it ( rye) down and over-seed with a summer mix especially with the rains through June.
How long did the crimson clover last (month)? IT should be interesting how this worked out.
Great tip, Mark! I planted this mix on 1/2 of a pasture. The proceeding summer grasses came up evenly in both the planted and unplanted portions. The sheep grazed it twice in the spring season so this was likely enough to clip it and clear the way for that summer growth.
