Hello friends,
In wake of the recent natural disasters (hurricane Helene and Milton) I sent out an email last week asking if you had 1-3 “essentials” you’d recommend for an emergency (besides food and water).
I received almost 25 pages worth of response to that question!! Below is a list of 70+ suggestions from those email responses.
Would you help me improve this prepping supplies list by commenting with brands/types/itemized suggestions?
For example, “first aid kit” is something a lot of people suggested, but if you have a list of items in your first aid kit, comment with what they are.
Same with things like generators or walkie-talkie sets; if you have a specific brand that has served you well, leave a comment with the brand. I will update the blog post with your recommendations!

“A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.” Proverbs 22:3
Generator – I have a Kohler 7500W portable generator. I love it, but I’m not sure they make portable generators anymore. The best thing about this generator is that it it only needs the oil changed every 100 hours of operation and it has an hour meter. My previous generator suggested an oil change every tank of fuel. HUGE difference. That said, need to be aware of maintenance requirements of equipment and have extra on hand.
Honestly, as far as radios go you only have to reliable options. GMRS, and amateur radio.
GMRS is great for family farm operations as the license is $35, lasts for ten years, and covers the entire family sans cousins. It is repeater capable, and the radios are rather inexpensive if you stay away from Midland.
Amateur radio is more intensive, but its coverage is vastly greater, but the licenses require an easy test, and only covers a single person.
Every other year we refresh the walkie talkies, our kids roam all over our property with these attached to their hiking backpacks. we use these and they take a breathing but also have encrypted channels so it’s just are only taking to us. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D6YYTDXN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
For the first aid kit, I can not stress how important saline is, we get spray saline so we can also leverage the pressure of it to clean grit out of wounds. We also refresh this every 6-12 months. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AVKFF3K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Sewing skills are also invaluable and apply in so many emergency situations.
Pro One gravity-fed water purification system.
Sawyer makes good water filters, I used the sawyer squeeze while backpacking through the desert: https://www.sawyer.com/product-categories/water-filtration
Love this post; thank you for doing it! We’re happy with the My Medic FAKs (first aid kits). Living rurally- a good drive from any medical urgent care- we’ve used them more times than I want to think about. We’ve added tourniquets and Israeli bandages and Quick Clot, etc., to beef them up and keep colloidal silver, raw honey, hydrogen peroxide (get it from Azure Standard and dilute), etc., at home and on hand. Everyone needs a solid first aid kit.
In our first aid kit I stock butterfly bandages, all the sizes of band aids, 4×4 and 2×2 gauze pads (lots of them, because just one bad cut can use up a 2″ stack), gauze cling wrap, vet wrap, antibiotic ointment, cold packs (the squeeze to activate, instant kind), soothe-a-stings, alocaine gel, calomine, manuka honey, essential oils of lavender, tea tree, oregano and 4 thieves (a blend), ibuprofen, benedryl, hydrogen peroxide, nail trimmers and tweezers.

Make sure “homeopathic antibiotic” Hepar Sulph 200c is in your kit.

I live off grid in northern Utah, so solar panels and a wind turbine provide most needed electricity. I also have a dual fuel generator (gas & propane) that comes on automatically to charge the battery bank when the sky is cloudy.

I have gone through three of these Westinghouse generators over the years, and they work really well. I live on a large “place of refuge”, designed to help people who will be escaping the cities when the civil war starts.
Thanks for this post and keep up the good work!
